Ford Motor Co. To Bring In Cloud Based Technologies For Automobiles

Is Cloud Computing only a computer concept? This is what that came to my mind when I first heard about cloud based services offered by Ford through Ford SYNC^®. The answer is little tricky but after all, this is what a ‘free flow of technology’ all about. First we develop technology for one field and the employ it something another after we achieve a sufficient amount of skill in that technology.

If you will recall, Ford introducing future technologies like Talking cars a few months back, you probably won’t be surprised when it will launch advanced cloud based services to make cars smarter than earlier. The technological innovations which Ford launches are aimed at systematizing road traffic across the globe. The present one is however projected to reduce the carbon foot print of your vehicle.

Ford is very soon going to present its cloud based technology in 18th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems. The researchers will demonstrate how a car can switch from gasoline to battery while driving. The vehicle will automatically sense when it needs to change the source of power supply depending upon the conditions to minimize the carbon emission. In other words, the technology is mainly for the plug-in Hybrid vehicles (PHEV).

For EVs Ford is partnering with other auto majors to set up harmonized and speedy battery charging stations. The American company has rightly sensed the direction of market and is working on the PHEVs before starting for EVs which will at least require another 25 years to replace completely the gasoline fed vehicles. PHEVs will provide a smooth transition in this case and will prove to be a profit making venture.

It will be a matter of speculation if this technology of adapting the power train performance according to driving conditions can be employed in other car variants also. The company is also considering the aspect of incorporating Drivers habits in to the electrical systems so that they will make him/her comfortable while driving. Of course such features will be optional and will be at customer’s disposal whether to opt for those or not. A similar feature was showcased in last month’s Frankfurt motor show in Ford’s Evos. It will take a few more years to commercialize and to get on road.

Ford’s current Escape engine lineup includes a four-cylinder, a V6 and a hybrid, but for 2012 Ford has revealed that the Escape will arrive with a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated Ti-VCT four-cylinder, a 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine that bests the outgoing hybrid model’s fuel economy and a V6-replacing 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine.

Flu vaccines available in October

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Cape May County Department of Health will offer many types of flu clinics in October.

“The CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] recommends an annual flu shot every year as the best way to protect against getting the flu,” said Freeholder Gerald Thornton. “Because the body’s immunity against flu viruses declines over time, it’s important to get vaccinated every year.”

The Department of Health will hold special senior high-dose flu and pneumonia clinics from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Oct. 6, and Wednesday, Oct. 12, for residents 65 years and older. The department’s office is at 6 Moore Road, Cape May Court House.

The high-dose vaccine is free for those who have the following insurance as their primary payer: Medicare Part B, Aetna, Humana, and United Mine Workers of America. Otherwise, the vaccine is $45 by check or credit card. A receipt will be provided that can be submitted to other insurance companies for reimbursement.

The pneumonia vaccine is for $15 by cash or check. Residents should bring their Medicare cards and supplemental insurance cards to the clinic. The standard-dose flu vaccine will also be offered.

A drive-through flu clinic for residents who 14 years and older will be held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at Kindle Auto Plaza, which can be accessed at exit 9 off the Garden State Parkway in Cape May Court House.

Also, the Department of Health says that consent forms are required for the drive-through clinic and are available at www.cmchealth.net, the Department of Health office and will be in local newspapers in October.

Residents who need assistance with transportation for the drive-through clinic can call Fare Free Transportation at 889-3700. To minimize waiting times, the Department of Health encourages carpooling with friends and family.

Children and families clinics are also planned for children through 18 years and their families, from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the Glenwood Avenue Elementary School at Glenwood and New York avenues in Wildwood, and from 2-6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Department of Health office.

A limited supply of FluMist (nasal spray) vaccine is available in addition to the injectable vaccine and will be offered to children on a first-come, first-served basis.

People with a severe allergy to eggs or other vaccine components or those who have been told by a doctor that they have had Guillain-Barre syndrome need to receive the flu vaccine from their personal physician. Guillain-Barre syndrome happens when part of the nervous system is harmed by the immune system, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information website.

Those with a severe allergy to latex or Thimerosal can receive the vaccine from the Department of Health but not at the drive-through clinic, according to a press release.

Clinic dates, locations, times and consent forms will be posted at www.cmchealth.net and on the county’s flu hotline, 463-6581. Clinics will also be posted on the Department of Health’s Facebook page

A study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety revealed a significant drop in fatalities involving accidents between a car or a minivan versus an SUV of comparable weight.

By comparing two sample sets, one used to record the number of crashes involving SUVs registered in 2000-2001 and another to record SUVs from 2008-2009, IIHS discovered that fatalities have decreased from 44 deaths per million registered vehicles to a dramatically improved 16 deaths per million. Only SUVs and trucks weighing between 3,000 to 3,499 pounds were recognized for the study.

Specialists have concluded that the positive findings have the continuing innovations on safety to thank. Late model cars and minivans possess more effective crumple zones, stronger structures, as well as curtain airbags. Preemptive sensors such as lane departure and blind spot warnings also improve a driver’s odds of avoiding an accidentally completely.
